OUR HALLWAY MAKEOVER: BRING ON THE SUN

There is a reason hallways are not on magazine covers. They are often dark, cramped, and hard to photograph. Our upstairs hallway was no exception but I still wanted to share the transformation.

Initially, I was thinking a golden yellow for this space but as time passed (and your suggestions grew) I landed on Sherwin William’s Dutch Tile Blue. It’s a great color and much more calming than the yellow. Thank you for your input! So here are pictures from when I started to paint. Remember when I said I’m not great at taking befores?

Long ago I had started to hang pictures up the stairs (#juststarthanging) but never got to finishing. I had also thrown up some other random pictures I had on hand around the space in an attempt to achieve that collected look. But it never really worked and started to look a little hodge podge.

Remember my stamp project? It wasn’t helping the situation.

So down came the rogue frames. On went the blue paint. Up went the gallery wall and voila it was starting to look like a purposeful space. But then this happened….

Not trying to be dramatic here but this is how dark the hallway was. At noon. On a sunny day. See how bright the boys’ room is? It was my first attempt at photos of the finished space and well…it was depressing. We had planned on adding sun tubes to the space eventually (we loved our one in the kitchen) but now seemed as good a time as ever. And with Joe working in a room at the end of the hall it made sense to brighten his day as well.

So two sun tubes later….

We have light! Lots of it.

And a gallery wall! I didn’t buy anything new for this wall. It was all stuff I had on hand and BOY did it feel good to get it all hung in a place it can be appreciated (not a box in my basement).

And I hung two Isolation Creation pieces from @jamiebeck. Their scale and peaceful nature helped balance the gallery wall.

And here is the view up the stairs. I was initially going to paint this wall blue but keeping it white in the end allowed the pieces to really shine. I need one more for above the red Dennis Noyer Lithograph. More reason to keep thrifting!

So there you have it. Not cover worthy, but fun to see the transformation a little sunshine can make.
